What is a Paul Heyman Guy?
Over the last several years, Paul Heyman has been used by WWE to help get superstars over both with his microphone skills and his creative input into story-line development. He has been most prominently featured as the advocate for the WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar but also had a short swarray with CM Punk. The difference being that CM Punk didn’t need a mouthpiece like Lesnar does. In the end, Brock has been unable to connect with fans through his words and is known for being a bruising force. Paul Heyman adds the layer that is so essential for any talent to truly get over.
After the events on Monday Night, it is clear that Paul Heyman’s time as the advocate are drawing to a close. Of course this is all story-line so that Brock can make his exit from WWE a clean break with no loose ends to tie up as he makes his way back to UFC. Unfortunately, that leaves an incredible creative mouthpiece without a spot on the show. Or does it?
After being man handled by Brock Lesnar, Paul Heyman seemed to be a blubbering baby on Monday night. Fortunately, Paul Heyman always seems to have a backup plan. He has been consulting on creative meetings specifically with regard to who would be booked to face Brock Lesnar at Summer Slam. He has seemed to have great chemistry with the audience. Invariably, there must be someone who could benefit from his services.
Enter Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns has been selected by Vince McMahon to be the face of the company despite anything the WWE Universe has to say about it. If we are being completely honest, Roman Reigns has developed quite a bit over the last three years and is primed for a long run with the Universal Championship. I suspect that one of the only attributes he lacks is a strong interview presence.
Roman famously forgot his lines last year during a face off with John Cena and has been limited at best since. The use of a new advocate who could do the talking for him would be a welcome addition. Paul Heyman could also be used to drive a wedge between Roman Reigns and any other talent that Heyman would deem as not on Roman’s Level. That could be the way to kick off a new feud between Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. We have been there and done that before though. It could also be a way to reignite the feud between Roman and Braun Strowman, the Money in the Bank Winner. This time, Roman would be the clear heel and Braun is the over the top baby face.
Why it would be Best For Business
WWE needs to generate additional interest and intrigue in their product. They just attracted some of the richest network deals in the history of broadcast television and need to cater their programming accordingly. They have seen the boos rain down on Roman Reigns since he defeated the Undertaker at WrestleMania and that doesn’t seem to be ready to change despite the fans cheering “We want Roman” on Monday Night.
Pairing Roman Reigns with Paul Heyman would allow Paul to cost Brock Lesnar the Universal Championship. It would officially turn Roman Reigns heel which is long overdue. In addition, it would put the championship on a talent we know will be featured on the shows every week and bring legitimacy to the WWE Universal Title that it sorely needs.
Is Roman Reigns the NEXT Paul Heyman Guy? I sure hope so!
