Independent Wrestling Review - Chikara

Egg Monsters From Mars

The Title is Cartoonish and fun. The presentation was fantastic. After touring many independent promotions over the years, I was privileged to have been invited to Chikara and their Season 19 Television Taping titled “Egg Monsters From Mars”.

I have to admit that when I saw the name of the show I didn’t know what to expect but I suspended any preconceived notions and went into the show with no expectations. To my surprise, the show delivered on every level.

Starting with the moment I walked through the door, I was met with some of the most welcoming staff I have encountered at an independent wrestling show. They had a great merchandise section with wrestlers there to take photos with fans and sign autographs. It was clear from the beginning that there is a truly organic and mutual bond between the talent and their fans.

Once I found my seat, the show did not disappoint. The characters are very family friendly but the in ring action was authentic and physical. They did not shy away from inter-gender matches with two of them on this show including the main event between the Chikara Grand Champion who goes by the name Juan Francisco De Coronado and his challenger Solo Darling.

There was ample supply of technical wrestling with stars such as Icarus, Princess Kimberlee, and the Whisper as well as unique figures such as Merlok, Ice Cream Jr, and Hallowicked who provided a kid friendly approach to character development.

From top to bottom, the presentation was fantastic. The facility located at 4711 Wingate Street in Philadelphia, is set up perfectly for professional wrestling. They had great lighting and a more sophisticated entrance ramp than many independent promotions which gave a more upscale feel to the show. Even the ring announcer, Preston Blathers, was entertaining.

When I decide to go to a show, I am always hoping I won’t regret the investment. When it comes to Chikara, there is no disappointment. They are a quality outfit that produces exciting action, great excitement, high spots, unique match concepts, and innovative characters. If you are looking for a fantastic experience and have not had an opportunity to see Chikara, don’t miss out on another show!
